HELP! Camshaft Position Sensor Removal
1996 XJS with the AJ16 engine.
I am trying to remove my camshaft position sensor to get to replace the upper chain tensioner and need to know if it is critical to getting the engine to TDC in order to remove it.
It is in the way of the tensioner and I plan on putting the cam sensor back. The TDC mark/dimple is currently at 10 o'clock, instead of the 3 o'clock position it would have to be to be TDC. I have marked it, and I think I can get it back to the same position, but should I, or will bad things happen?
Thank you.

I've never encountered a crankshaft/camshaft sensor that required the camshaft be lined up. They are usually a really easy in and out affair. Most engine sensors like that are just hall effect sensors, so they aren't indexed or anything and have no need to be.
When I replaced mine, I just lifted the camshaft sensor, replaced chain tensioner and then put back the camshaft sensor exactly as I took it out so I suppose its not critical?
Had to undo it again few days later as oil was leaking from underneath it. I've used instant gasket to fix that leak so have it ready before you take it out.

I figured it out. It does go back in the way it was pulled out, so make sure you mark where the dot is befoe you pull anything out. Being at TDC doesn't matter.
I had issues because I changed the o-ring and it was too thick, so it wasn't seating properly. You will need a 1-1/16"OD, 15/16"ID, 1/16"D o-ring.
These will work from Amazon.
I bought mine from McMaster-Carr. Part Number 1288N121
