Default How quickly should a V12 heat up?

Hi all!

I'm a little worried, that my V12 is suffering from some kind of hidden engine damage...

It runs smooth (just every so often has a lumpy idle) and fires well, just I find it gets VERY quickly warm. It has 82°C thermostats (being a catfree UK model, I find they are more than enough) - both new - and after starting it, about 2 minutes idling, the thermostats are so warm, that they open up.

You can tell that, because the hoses will all of a sudden heat up.

I wouldn't say it overheats, as the temperature gauge seems to work fine (I know, don't trust electrical parts from British Leyland).

I just find it very "shocking". Yes, 12 pistons in 12 cylinders will make a lot of heat... But should it be that quick?

Cheers

Damien

Does not take long as cylinder liners are in full contact with water passages.

So you say that my engine shouldn't be "ill"?

Not saying Jagfixer is wrong, but all mine take forever to warm up in cold weather. By cold weather I mean snow on the ground, car has been off at least overnight. Probably at least 6 or 7 minutes at city speeds for the gauge to read normal.

For the stats to "crack open" after a couple of minutes is quicker than I have had them. Especially with the engine driven fan.

Mine are quicker due to thermo fans, BUT, if the car is moving along, then the COLD ram air slows down heat up quite a bit.

I would NOT be getting too concerned about it. As long as that SUPER reliable temp gauge stay below the "N" all is deemed OK.

Mine never reaches Normal, even when caning it in hot weather or stuck in traffic.
Worry about something else for the time being!

Agreed.

The smile on your face whilst driving an XJ-S has to be just right, so concentrate on that, HAHA.

Seriously, if the thing is sorted as we constantly explain on here, and the cooling system is clean inside and out, it simple will NOT overheat. Ours sees summers of 47C and the "N" is never reached, and we both DRIVE all our V12's as designed, flat out.
