I just bought a 1986 XJ-SC
Finally, I can experience the heritage of Jaguar...how eccentric and truly niche those cars were...all those keys, the emergency brake, and the gentle way you must handle the bonnet and boot...that very smooth V12...I also own a 2002 S Type 4.0 and a 2010 XF 4.2...and even though they lost some of their uniqueness when they tried to be more marketable to average car buyers, and younger ones respectively...you still have to give them a lot of credit for keeping the Jaguar driving experience alive...I.e., that same responsiveness is in the S Type and the XF that's in the classic Jaguars...but I love how eccentric they used to be..with my 1986 XJS I finally have a real Jaguar from the old country. A few weeks ago, I test drove a 2020 XE and it seems they've taken the ontology of Jaguar driving, made a computer simulation out of it, and attempted to program it into their new cars...it's pretty good..but now that I have experienced the real thing in my 1986 XJS V12...I can't explain it...it's just the best driving experience there is.
Good on you.
The REAL Jaguars are the REAL cars, and all the others are a very poor compromise.
A properly sorted XJS V12 is a marvel, and there is simply no words for it in MY opinion.
YOU are in control, not some long list of acronyms, that have no real control over anything.
Enjoy the experience, they dont make em like that anymore.

You, Sir, are, to your great credit, able to see and feel exactly what made Jaguar Cars such a legendary manufacturer. There are things you ought to do to make the car reliable - not modifications, just replacing parts past their useful life after all these years - and once you have, the car will be superb and will not let you down. After a properly sorted V12 XJS, everything else is just toothpaste.

A sorted-out XJS really is a fabulous car. Perhaps not 'best' in any single category but certainly a very well executed melding of attributes.
But I must stop there. I'm sorely tempted to buy another....and I really do have other things I should be spending money on
Cheers

Well done. You've just got yourself an investment or rather part of it - first part. You won't cut your coupons out of it. What I love in XJS - is the fact that it is made of steel. British sheet metal to be unfortunately precise. Not sure how that works, but Jaguar cars are having big status outside of UK. Maybe te export versions were better? In Great Britain those cars are reflecting teue love in the same way lik GAZ Wolga reflects it in Eastern Block. Within two years you'll get rid of it or do your degree in mechanical engineering...
The question, Doug, is not, "do you have other things you should be spending your money on?" - we all do. It is: "do you have other things you want to spend your money on?"...
Jaguars still make the best cars..(not talking about those SUVs, which need to be taken out back and shot)...the modern 4.0 S Type and 4.2 XF are fantastic sedans that possess the Jaguar ontological experience that you will never get in another car...but..but...those cars don't beat the 1986 XJ-SC, which still handles fantastic! amazing for a car that age....but that classic Jag is the one where you roll up on a hot babe and just look at her...it is that great.
