Induction manifold

anyone know if the small holes are meant to have a seal of any type? I notice on the head side and manifold side a black sticky gunk in some of the holes. Is that from an old seal or just dirty? 92 xjs v12

Those holes are for the air injection system, if yours is removed then those holes need to be plugged, grub screws will do the job.
