Can anyone summarize what portions of the interior are leather vs. Vinyl for a mid 80s XJS? Example, I've found that the kick panels are apparently covered in vinyl. How about door cards, console, rear side panels, etc? I want to use the right cleaning and preservation products on the right things.

 

This is something that varied over the years. The USA cars were sometimes trimmed differently than ROW cars, 6-cyl cars different that V12s, coupes differently than open cars, etc.

My 1988 XJS Coupe, USA spec, had full leather seats (not just the facings), leather door trim panels and rear seat side panels, and leather console. The kick panels were vinyl, as I recall.

If you give the year of your XJS and original sales market you might hear from enough other owners to establish something fairly conclusively.

Got an 88 and 89 and both have leather on seat face and leather consoles with rear arm rest in leather. Seat backs and sides are vinyl, as are door panels and kick panels.

This topic is rare situation where poor maintenance helps ID the part, vinyl will survive a nuclear blast and look brand new, leather (without maintenance) ages like road-killed armadillo.

 

Well, my seats look like crap, but my console, and rear side bolsters are in good shape, hence the question. Thanks!
