Hi All,
After lusting after an xjs for the better part of 25yrs, I finally own one.
Okay purists may scoff, but it is the 3.6 coupe on a 1987 plates. 60,000miles and very straight and tidy.
I only need a couple of items / issues to resolve to make this car perfect.

1) - Bumper chromes - any ideas where i can get?
2)- Front LH lower panel to replace
3) Complete set of door / boot / bonnet seals
4) Instrument rheostat - can you bypass as never dim the instruments anyway.

What material are the door cards made of.

Oh, and of course a roof liner.

Any help apprecaited - this is a daily runner and will be kept for years to come.

Welcome to the forum and the trials and tribulations of XJS ownership.
And the joys of course.
Parts are available from a variety of places; David Manners, Grublogger, Norman Motors, Growler Jaguar Parts plus plenty more.
The rheostat can be easily by-passed but don't be surprised if it has already been done!
Roof liners can be bought ready to fit from the XJS Club; there is a one off £10 joining fee to register your car.

Welcome, to the forum ! i had an 87 coupe 3.6 with standard shift, back in the day in England, and it was one of the most reliable cars I have owned. Sold it back in 93 with 110,000 miles when we came over the pond, and it was still going strong ! Only issues I had was to replace the rear trailing arm bushings, and some tinworm in one of the 'flying butresses ...........go figure

 

Congrats on the 3.6. I have a 84 5 speed with 142k miles that I bought
several years ago with 76k on her. It's a great car, and handles more like a sports car than a grand tourer.

A 6 cylinder Jaguar AJ6 engine is the direct successor of the XK Engine. If someone scoffs they don't know what they are talking about! I love the V12 on my E type, but I would not want it on my XJS. Even though the bay is larger , on the E the whole bonnet comes of and makes it easier to work on

If I ever want a second XJS, I will get a manual 3.6 coupe

I second (or third) the request for pics! I love the looks of the XJS but have been scared to own one.

 

Masonite. Available at lowes and home depot,4x8 sheets You could make them yourself but, it's tedious (pulling all the staples out carefully as to not damage the vynl. If you have time but no money and like to work with your hands and like a challenge, make them. If you have money and no time, Pauls jagaur.Bud

Have had a good look around the internet and can get hold of most items, but once again - thanks for the help.

Doug - No.2 / Er..... It is the panel in front of the front left wheel, below the bumper. Don't worry though, have found one of those too!

Okay - I didn't think anything of this, but my father inlaw drove m,y car and mentioned the steering was a but vague (he has had XJS's in the past).
It seems to require a quarter turn on the steering wheel, before enything really happens to the front wheels.
No leaks, and fluid is topped up and bled..

Any ideas?

 

 

Nice! love that its an I6.

 

Almost certainly the rack and pinion mounting bushings have rotted away. Lots of choices in urethane from aftermarket vendors. If you get Jaguar replacements make sure to ask for the "sportspack" version.

Ditto, love the 5.3, but ______ is it a pain in the ______ to replace/repair anything due to no room for normal size hands.

 

I think that I6 is 'inline 6' or what us chaps would call a straight 6.

 

You have what could be the original yellow fan. I replaced mine a few years ago when the clutch started to slip. It wasn't too bad a job. If my recollection is good, those original fans become brittle and if they splinter, cause damage.

As has been stated, normal wear parts on the running gear are likely in need of replacement. Also, hub checks for wheel bearings etc.

 

Nice ride! I sure love the 12, but man that 6 looks like it would be much easier to work on.

In-line 6 - straight six (makes sense!)

Had the carpets and seats out over the weekend, no damp or tin worm in the panels which was a relief. Plan to do the wheel bearings and bushings over the next couple of weekends as noticed the "clac.clack" sound when heavy cornering. So far though I'm delighted!

Oh, have heard that water hoses become brittle after somoe time - can you get uprated sets?
