Looking for info on Hess & Eisenhardt Coupe?
Hello, I am new here as I have recently had the opportunity to purchase 2 Jaguars, a 1985 XJ6 V8 Conversion and a 89 XJS. The question I have is the XJS is a Hess & Eisenhardt edition but it is a coupe? I've only been able to find info on the convertibles. The person I bought the car from told me they made less than 400 of them?? What makes this car any different than a stock XJS? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Tony

As bet I can determine the H&E coachbuilders converted coupes to convertibles as you noted. They also had an electronic sunroof available for the coupes. The picture you provided doesn't seem to show a sunroof however. The only other thing I can think of is some additional wood and leather dress ups.

I worked on H&E convertibles at a Jaguar dealership when they were introduced, and never heard of a coupe then or since.
H&E reused the stock coupe components whenever possible during the conversion. It's not like they fitted custom components to replace existing ones unless there was a direct relationship to the chop job. They manufactured their own trim panels for the previous rear seat area, and punched a bigger hole in the center console veneer panel for the larger switch plate to accomodate the extra three switches: the rest of the interior was stock.
It would also be very easy to acquire a pair of H&E badges and glue them on an XJS coupe.

1988 H&E and 1991 Convertibles V12 XJS
I own two low mileage V12 XJS convertibles. All I have to do is go out to the garage and I can compare the two easily...
The only real differences I think to mention are how deep the actual soft top retracts. The H&E is flush and the Collectors 91 does not. The seats in the 91 are a little more plush as well.
I dont think there's much more to say...
As far as an H&E coupe I would like to know where he got the 400 count. That sounds like he researched it and found out this number. I would like to know why he came up with that number...
The H&E convertible production is between the high 800's and over 2000. There was a factory fire and those document numbers were lost. Again why the disparaging number 800's to the low 2000's. Why are these quoted like that?

"High Efficiency"
Good Point Doug, Thats probably it...."High Efficiency".The only other logical reason I could think is that Hess and Eisenhardt had additional coupes that they either didn't have time to convert to the convertible or perhaps the contract was pulled with the advent of the factory convertibles coming and since the cars were there waiting for conversion on the outside chance maybe for a lesser fee from Jaguar did make the Hess and Eisenhardt coupes. Probably unlikely but an interesting thought anyway
