Default Manual gearbox not going into gear

Hi folks.

Wondering if I am heading for big gearbox problems on my '89, 3.6 coupe manual (136k miles).

Bought a year ago and no gearbox issues but after a short drive today followed by a 20 minute rest I could not get into any gear. No grinding or anything like that but the gear lever would not slide into any gear. Almost seemed as though the gear lever would not move far enough to engage a gear.

After a few mins gently working the lever it slid into gear and all was well. Went on several short drives and still seems ok.

The gear lever has always seemed fairly loose with large movements between gears and I wonder about wear in external linkages / bushes perhaps.

Anyone experience anything like this? Any thoughts as to likely cause / fix? Cheap / expensive? There was a similar post on here a while ago but I cannot find to see how it ended.

Thanks for reading,
LeeP

Is the clutch operating right? If it is always biting even though the pedal is fully depressed, gear won't budge/go in...

There is some sort of big rubber bush or suchlike, in the lever mechanism. When this goes home, your symptoms are what occur, as the lever is not properly connected to the actual box. Not that bad to renew I believe. Never done it or seen it, but I remember someone posting about it.

No personal experience of Jaguar manual gearbox, but your symptoms suggest linkage problem to me

You might check the fluid level in your clutch cylinder. If too low, this will often keep you from selecting a gear. If low, you should look for worn seals somewhere in the chain (clutch master or release bearing cylinder).

Thanks guys.

Clutch fluid level is OK and clutch feels and operates fine so I am going to research linkage construction which, like Greg and Paul, is my guess at the moment to.

I will also try and find the previous post on this subject to.

Cheers,
