Default Marelli/Lucas Starter Overhaul

Hi all,

Whilst my Marelli/Lucas (Marelli Motor, Lucas solenoid) starter is out, I was thinking of somehow overhauling it. I mean, when is it the best time to do so?

Is it possible? Before removal, it worked well and always engaged. I was thinking of taking it to pieces and at least giving it some fresh grease...

Ideas? Tips?

Cheers

Damien

My car ate 2 starter motors, since I fitted a reduction gear starter 8 years ago no more problems.

If I were you I would lash out on a new starter motor while you have the engine out. This starter is also about 1/2 the weight of the original.

This is similar to what I have

I'd prefer to keep with the old style due to reasons hard to understand for non-Germany-residents...

My starrer works with no issue just Whilst it is out ...

My Marelli starter was inspected when I had it off for replacement of the exhaust manifold gaskets. He may have been wrong, but the guy I have trusted for years showed me the brushes (4), and how two of them were completely shot. He searched for parts, and couldn't find them. I relented, and also went to the gear reduction starter. It isn't as easy as a direct replacement, yet seems very serviceable for many years to come. I don't know the laws, or the reason to only want a direct original replacement, yet wish you well in finding it.

Interesting because the reduction gear starter I used bolted to my 89 with no mods

Damien, check the brushes and bearings, if they are good then put it back in.
