Default Marketing the 1996 XJS For Sale on Craigslist

This guy must work for an ad agency. It might just be the best ad for selling a 1996 XJS.

And at that price, he won't have it for long.

1996 Jaguar XJS

The pictures speak volumes, and his description is super informative.

Again, at this price, you know his phone will ring off the hook!

wow, you're right! I'll have to see if he ever does any freelance copywriting work -- I'm sure my clients at my strategic communications agency would love his stuff!

That's got to be a prank. Or they aren't very good with math and added some extra zero's at the end of their asking price.

Lots of people with old Jags think they're sittin' on a pot of gold....even when the car won't run.

They learn, soon enough.... :-)

Figure mine is worth anywhere between 8 to 12 thousand depending on how bad buyer would want it.

I have also seen on fleabay and cl same year, model as mine and asking up to 19,000 but asking and selling is 2 different critters. lol

I'm always amused by the folks selling a 10 to 30 year old Jaguar, and touting the fact that it has, "Barely been driven in last 8 years, must see!" or similar.

The pictures are so bad, I can't even tell what color that is!

There is little indication, like mileage.

There's quite a fuzzy to-do list. I mean the stuff he does know about seems pretty severe.

I just can't believe someone posted that and thought to themselves, "Oh yeah, this is good! I'd buy this if I read this ad!"

I can actually go and take a look at this car I live in Las Vegas. Summerlin(rich people area) located on the west side Las Vegas.

When I visit the car what questions should I ask them the owners?

Its going to be interesting when I roll up in the same car that they are trying to sell and break the bad news to them that I only paid $4,850 for mine.

It's amazing what's out there.
A '91 with an 8.2 Liter Cadillac engine and a 2500 watt sound system.
Another one for $1500, but if he gets it running, "the price will go up".
Makes for fun reading over the morning coffee.

Huh, I got mine for $3,000. The previous owner was more interested in selling to someone that would take care of it than making money. He also seemed to realize that it hadn't been run in five years (because he has health problems), that it needed some work, and that, while drivable, it wasn't up to par with where it used to be. Regardless of what people are trying to sell, it amazes me that people think "low miles" or "lifted/modded/etc." = "more money".

As for what to ask them, how about "What was the milage on the last oil change?" as you pull out the dipstick?

I agree, either overly optimistic or a mistake. Paid $3300 for my '91 convert, in fairly good running condition, few minor faults.

Tell him you have a orphan Jaguars shelter, maybe he'll donate it.

On the upside, it sounds like this Jag already comes neutered/spayed!

A few weeks back I went to see this car. When I arrived at the house the actual person that I talked to on the phone and knew anything about the car was not there because he had to take care of his sick baby. So the whole time I was there I was dealing with the the owners mother and/or grandmother(there were two people). I was invited into there home and told by one of the ladies to write information down(name, address, phone) stating that she was financially responsible for the car witch is understandable. I agreed. They take me into the garage where the car is at. There was not that much space and they could not get the garage open that enplanes why their pictures where horrible, no light.

The paint was in good condition no visible corrosion just a lot of swirls.

Pop the hood I was surprised by how clean the engine bay was. Not even surface dust. I tried to open the oil cap but was unable too. I was able to rotate the cap like 1/4th but no more. The ladies were encouraging me to try harder, I refused stating that I did not want to "damage anything". I moved on to the dip stick that was hard to very hard pull out. Eventually I got the stick out the oil was clean light brown. Looked cleaner than my oil witch was changed 1,000 miles ago. I was unable to get the transmission dip stick out.

I ask them when was the last time the car was running. They said 4 years ago and has been sitting in this garage since then. The licence plate tags confirmed that the car has not been registered since 2009.

I open the coolant reservoir it was empty witch probably explains the "Coolant hose to thermosdat housing leaking" in the CR ad. The reservoir also had a lot of sediment in the bottom of the tank looked like sand to me.

Did not have key to gas cap.

Battery was dead, unable to see if electronics worked.

Interior
The panel under the steering wheel was falling down. Same thing happens in my XJS it gets annoying.

After I was done with the car I talk to the ladies about the car. She says that her mechanic wants $3,000 to get the car running again. Then we discuss the price. I tell her that the car is worth around $2,500 in the condition that its in. She took it as an insult and says that the the car cost $65,000 when it was new and I was like yeah back in 1996. Then I proceed to show her the KBB on the car and explain how I only paid $5000 for mine. I asked her how many people responded to the CR ad she claims 10 people 3 people came and saw the car. She was probably bluffing. I don't think anybody came to see that car. She also said that one person offered $15,000.

After I tell them that I cannot buy this car(like I was going to buy it in the first place) and that they need to come way down on the price she asks if she could see my car. She is walking around my car and is competing on how beautiful my car is. Then I tell her that I only paid $5,000 for it.

I have 5 min of of our conversation recorded but I can't find a USB cable to transfer the file over to my computer.

Thanks for posting the pics and description. Might not want to post the audio, some of the laws regarding that are funny.

Some of the buyers in Vegas want a car for their second or more homes. Trust fund kids and relatives have no idea what to sell these cars for.

Its has been a long time since we have seen Jags for nothing. We picked up a few E types in the 80's for $1500 but that has long since dried up. The V-12 is about $7-10K to rebuild versus a Kelly book of $2-10K, this is a problem.
