Default Mystery Oil Leak Under Tdc Indicator AJ16 4.0L Engine

Hi Guys

Having got 'Carmen' my 1995 4.0L XJS with AJ16 Engine Running 'At long last' and moving (Yes! Moving as well!) She has suddenly developed a 'Mystery Oil Leak'

Which does not appear to be anything to do with the Oil Cooler and also it's not the power steering, as this is Engine Oil

The Oil Leak appears to be coming from underneath the Round Tdc Indicator with the little Glass Window

'Conspiracy Theory' When I was replacing the Cps (Crank Position Sensor) I couldn't get the Plug Connector off the Bracket 'as you have to push something to release it' and that it quite awkward to do

So I undid the 2 Nuts that hold the Bracket on and then took the Bracket Off, complete with its Plug in Connector, which then gave me more room to get it undone

When I put the New CPS on the Car and Put that Bracket back, there is a possibility that I purposely didn't do those Nuts up too tight in case in wasn't working, or I had to adjust it in some way

Is there anything else that those Nuts hold in place, apart from just that Bracket, that might cause an Oil Leak?

The Oil appears to be dripping out, rather than pouring out like it would if I had an Oil Cooler leak 'but its still quite bad'

Any Ideas?

The Oil Leak appears to be coming from underneath this Tdc Indicator, where I removed the Bracket that holds the electric plug for the CPS but do those 2 nuts that hold the Bracket for this electric plug of the CPS, also hold anything else like for instance a Cover on something where loose nuts would cause it to leak?

Its a camshaft position sensor, for starting the car. Leak can either be from underneath it or maybe even from chain tensioner. I'm pretty sure I had to use a gasket sealant under mine to stop the small leak after I replaced the chain tensioner(it has to be removed to remove chain tensioner). Have a good look, as we cant see from the pic, and if its a leak from underneath camshaft position sensor, undo two bolts, put some sealant gasket there and tighten it up again, should be ok. Alternatively if its a small leak, leave it as it is, your subframe will thank you for it

Alex,

#6 in this parts drawing, is the plate UNDER that bracket you removed, and there is a gasket under that plate, and disturbing it has caused it to lose its sealing ability.
#7 are the 2 bolts you removed.

Remove it, smear a layer of RTV on it and refit, FINGER tight, and DO NOT tighten until tomorrow, problem solved.

That leak drove me nuts on my X300, and lots of JD before I realised what I had done, OOPS.

Hi Grant

Cheers!

I will do as you suggested, really awkward to get to but it could have been something much worse

(Mystery Oil Leak) How lucky was that!
I'd just moved 'Carmen' my 1995 4.0L XJS with AJ16 Engine (and an Oil Leak!) out of the way to sweep up some Leaves, when I found this 'Blanking Plate' laying on the ground, that might have got dumped along with the leaves if I hadn't seen it

It must have fallen on the ground when I removed the Bracket that holds that awkward to get to plug connector for the CPS (Crank Position Sensor)

Its a lot heavier than it looks, so when I removed the Bracket the weight alone could easily have dislodged it

If it hadn't been for 'The Jaguar Gods' I could have very easily swept this up and thrown it away but at least I know where she is leaking oil from!

FAIR DINKUM Alex, you are a "SPECIAL" Jag owner.

That there be your oil leak, and well done on the gardening and the find.

Another SIMPLE Jag fix.

Hi Grant

Cheers!

Not sure what you mean by special, I think I just got lucky when I found that blanking plate laying on the ground and if everything goes according to plan, it should be a bit of a nightmare to put back

JD mate, usually a litre prior to commencing, does the trick.

Hi Grant

Followed your Instructions with the RTV

But couldn't see a thing, so had to do the job with 'Smoke and Mirrors'

Where from start to finish putting back that 'Blanking Plate' only took Five Minutes and now She isn't leaking anymore!
