I'm pretty sure if you look behind this cover you will see one of the drive shaft universal joints. The wheel bearing is also inside this housing.
It looks funny because there's no disc or drum brake, which is usually what you see when you take off a wheel...... as of course the XJS has inboard discs at the rear.
