Default Need help with ID of diff on '88 XJS

Hello all,

I am on the hunt for a limited slip diff for my project and have the opportunity to buy a whole rear end from a 1988 XJS in a local junkyard. It's a V12 car,
car, VIN: SAJNA5845JC148637
I was not able to rotate the wheels to see if they turned together, or to count driveshaft turns to check ratio.

The rear cover is finned aluminum, but the ID tag was unreadable (corroded and dirty). There was a drain plug present on the bottom of the pumpkin.

Can anyone confirm if this is a limited slip unit? What ratios were available this year?

Agreed, and will 99% be a 2.88:1 unit, although some markets, mainly yours, got odd things from time to time, but diff ratios were not one that I remember?

It is also known as a GKN-Salisbury unit.

Thank you all!

I am fine with the 2.88 gears, after driving my car a few hundred miles now, the LS has plenty of grunt to get off the line and cruising is oh so relaxed.

Now, to decide whether to pick up this unit and rebuild it (clutches and bearings), or just buy an aftermarket locker and install in my existing 2.88 open XJ6 unit.

If the Power-Lock is worth anything I may grab it anyways for resale.

An Eaton TrueTrac in your XJ6 unit, or in this one, is the bees knees, I can tell you. I have one in my XJS and it is night and day better than any clutch-type LSD

I am weighing the option of going to pick up this rear end (3 hour ride round trip, plus the time to remove it from the junkyard car and load it up).

What is this differential worth on the used market? Assuming around 100K miles on it and in good working order. Just the pumpkin itself as I'd be keeping the halfshafts, cage etc for myself as spares.
