Default Need help with a TPS. (from a 5.3 ?)

Hi Guys,

I'm not a Jag owner... but I need help from this community. Here's the deal.......

I'm a mod over on the seadooforum, and for about 5 years, seadoo used a Mercury Marine SportJet engine in their boats. And... as some of you may know... any part for a boat is way more $$$ than a car part.

With that said... I've been on a quest for a replacement TPS for our Merc engines. The Mercury/Quicksilver replacement is over $500 !!!!!!! and they are known to fail. And, it seems like there is an epidemic starting with the 2000/2001 year boats.

The other night, I stumbled across a Lucas TPS that looked very close to the Merc TPS. Then... I tracked down it was from the 5.3l Jag engine. The only real difference that I can see from pictures I found was the plug on the end... but for a $400 savings... I'm sure the guys playing with the seadoo boats will have no issues with changing that. (lol)

Anyway... what I'm looking for is just some info right now. I found I can buy a new one from Rock auto for $122... but before I buy one... I thought you guys may be able to help.

Here's my thoughts, for someone who may know:

1) Can someone tell me the measurements on the Lucas TPS? (between the bolts, Length from the shaft to the mount, diameter of the snout that supports the shaft) Along with that, what way does the Lucas unit turn (looking at the shaft) and whats the resistance?

OR...

2) if someone has a good used one they want to sell cheap

OR....

3) if you have a bad one you would be willing to give up cheap.

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can give.

Just so you know what unit I'm talking about... here's the "Jag" unit... and below it is the "Merc" unit.

Thanks again.

OK , I dont have measurements.

That Jag one is the "replacement" update type for the 5.3 engines. The originals were a 3 legged mount, and made by Bournes, with a Lucas sticker.

It is also used on the early XJ40 XJ6, as in 1988 with the 3.6ltr engine, different plug on that car also. The 4ltr unit is different.

I have used that unit on a few 5.3 V12's, and one was mine 10+ years ago, still fine. All were s/hand from wreckers.

It is spring loaded return to zero, which on the V12 is a good thing.

Hope that helps a little.

Knowing it's spring loaded is good. I have a bad Merc unit in my garage... and it's spring loaded also. And thanks for the info on the other engines.

One thing I noticed, that the "Blade" part of the shaft sits at the same "zero" or resting spot as the red Jag one.

Just to let you guys know... I have no problems buying a new one... but I would like to narrow it down before I spend the $$$. Some times pics can be deceiving.

I found one local at a boneyard the other day... but the engine it was attached to was still good. So... they didn't want to sell it. I also looked on ebay for a used one. (no luck there)

The Jag TPS range is supposed to be .32V at idle to 5.0V at WOT. It probably goes a little lower than that to allow for adjustment.
You might want to look at the mustang TPS units. They are similar in range and considerably cheaper, so modifying one to make it fit may be worthwhile.

I did read a thread on the Mustang TPS. But... I'm trying to find an "Over the counter" solution so the members on my other board can use them too. It's easy to cut wires, and solder on a plug. But... to make a conversion mount... that's not something everyone can do.

BUT.... with that said... do you know the ford part number?

Thanks for the info on the Mustang TPS... but I think on the Merc engines... it's not going to work. The reason is... it mounts on the side of the 6 bore throttle body... and there's not a lot or room around it. Since the Mustang unit, has the plug on it... and it hangs off the side... it may not have enough room to be mounted.
