Default New 89 XJS Owner Questions

Hello,
I just purchased a 2 owner, 41,000 mile XJS convertible through Bring a trailer and have some sorting to do to make it more roadworthy as it has been driven only 500 miles in the past 6 years. Looking for some advise from you knowledgeable owners. 1.) What is the best repair manual to own for this car ? 2.) As I replace the tires should I use innertubes as it has dealer installed wire wheels. 3.) The driver side outside mirror sort of flops around helplessly, does anyone have experience repairing or is this an item to replace ? If replace who is a good supplier of parts. Many Thanks in advance. Andy

This sticky thread is a good place to start. Definitely download & check out Kirby Palm's book (also linked there).

No single publication will do the trick, IMO.

You can buy an abridged version of the the factory service manual...and it's a good starting point. You'll also want the parts catalog (excellent illustrations) and the S57 wiring guide (MUST have)

A lot of this stuff is out there on disc from JDHT (Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust) or re-sellers such as Jag parts suppliers. The disc content has varied a lot over the years. I can't comment on current offerings.

As mentioned the sticky threads have lots of tech literature and the Kirby Palm book is a great resource

2.) As I replace the tires should I use innertubes as it has dealer installed wire wheels.

I would, personally. But I'd be tempted to take the advice of the tire store you're buying from

3.) The driver side outside mirror sort of flops around helplessly, does anyone have experience repairing or is this an item to replace ? If replace who is a good supplier of parts. Many Thanks in advance. Andy

Everyday XJ is a great source for used parts. David Boger, the guy who owns the place, is much loved by all.

Everyday XJ

For new parts you have many choices. Coventry West, SNG Barrat, Welsh Jaguar, Terry's Jauar, Motorcars LTD, XKs Unlimited, Paul's Jaguar, FCP Euro...to name just a few. Even Rock Auto sells a lot of Jag stuff. All of them generally good but the odd problem or complaint inevitably crops up from time to time. But....beware of low grade and/or incorrect offerings at bargain prices. Best to ask here first before buying any particular item until you get the hang of knowing what to look for.

Cheers
DD

Yup, I've shopped in most. So far just great.

I'd add Johns cars aka Broken Kitties in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

And Jaguar-Specialties in the Norcal area.

Plus Jim Johnson in Fla. Suncoast, Punta Gorda, I think.

And, many of us have shared our spares or left overs.
