Default New To The Jag World....New To Jag Problems (93 XJS)

Hey folks!

So I recently purchased a 93 XJS convertible. When I received the vehicle the top and windows were all in working order. Now, about a week after the purchase, the passenger's side back quarter window will not roll up. It's odd, the top and driver's side back quarter window are both closed, but the passenger's side is only about a 1/4 of the way rolled up. Anything help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Any luck grabbing it and trying to shift its position or help the window up while pressing the button?

I haven't touched it for fear further issues, but I'll give that a try on my lunch break. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the convertible rear windows, but usually regulators will mess up or the window track will mess up, requiring extra force from the motor. Either jamming it up as it runs out of strength or possibly busting a fuse. You can sometimes see if this is the issue by helping the window up. Switches can go bad too but it sounds like an automatic function for the top going up.

I'm not sure if the rear windows have much of a track.

Next steps are the usual, listening for motor function and checking for power with a multimeter to see if the motor is getting power. Does it go up with the window switch? I'm presuming it doesn't if you are posting about it.

My 1996 did the same thing a few weeks back. Open the trunk and remove the cover to the left of the spare tire. On top is the pump for the top and a row of 7 relays. Remove each relay (one at a time) and re-seat it. If the issue is dirty contacts that will be enough to get it working again.

First thing to do is go to Jag Lovers, download "the book" by Kirby Palm, and read the section on the rear windows. You will find it of great utility for all the other problems you're going to have

Thanks for the feedback y'all I really appreciate it. Here's an update: I tried automatically lowering the the top, the window in question did nothing while the properly function quarter window did what it was supposed to do. Then I tried raising the top automatically while jiggling the non-functioning window. It did nothing. Still in the same place as where it got stuck. I understand the top and quarter windows are all connected, correct? So in theory it shouldn't be a motor issue. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks for the input Thorsen, that seems like a likely solution, I'll give that a try ASAP. Also, thanks Mark I'll surely be downloading that.

The motors both receive power and ground through relays, if the relays get burnt contacts ( which they do over time) then not enough current can flow to move the motor. See my post and circuit diagram here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...6/#post1758068

Remember that when you press the hood switch up, there's an 8 second delay before the rear windows start to operate.

Good luck

Thorsen, your solution worked like a charm! But furthermore, is there any thing I can do to clean these relays, Some of them don't look too good, or would it just be better to replace them? Here she is by the way:

Thanks.

Replace them with heavy duty 40 amp relays. Most standard relays are 30 amp and won't last long (the voice of experience!)

I bought a handful of 50amp relays and keep them in the trunk. After almost 25 continuous years of british car ownership, a few spares go a long way.

The bigger the relay the more heavy duty the contacts inside, and will last longer.

Just make sure you buy the correct relays, all the relays in the later XJS's have a diode across the coil pins 85 and 86, make sure the diode is the correct way this should be labeled on top of your original relays.

Ok, new relays. Got it.

Here's an unrelated issue: The aftermarket radio has no power whatsoever. Checked fuses on left hand side and they seemed to be fine but I replaced the radio power fuse anyway for good measure. Still nothing. Where do I go from here?

Thanks
