Default Noisy fan

Hi all, fired her up today for the first time in a while and after running upto temperature the fan kicked in. Initially it was very noisy a bit like a grumbling water pump. Is this a sign the viscous coupling is on it’s way out.? I know the water pump is good. Many thanks for any advice in advance.

Grumbling from a fan clutch is not good.

If turning the fan by hand you might well feel roughness to the rotation, akin to what you'd experince with a failing water pump bearing or alternator bearing. The clutch might be in the early stages of seizing-up.

A fan clutch failing in this manner could have serious consequences.

Cheers

Thanks Doug. I think I have got a little confused here, I’m sure it was the electric fan that was noisy when it kicked in. Is there a direct aftermarket replacement available? I know Greg advocates spal. Any specifics, don’t want to have to do much modding if possible. Or would a stock replacement be advisable. Will be keeping the belt driven fan.

Ahhh. Ok. The E-fan.

Easiest route is to simply replace like-for-like. New motor is NLA from Jaguar. That means finding a used fan motor. In my experience these motors are long-lived so finding a good one shouldn't be too difficult. Google "C38009 Jaguar" and see what pops up.

Alternative configurations are almost endless.

brinny,

You haven't said to which of your 3 XJSs you're referring?

They all use different fan motor part numbers as follows:

3.6 CAC2047 - NLA
4.0 CBC 6685 - Still Available c£400 genuine Jaguar
5.3 C38009 - NLA as mentioned by Doug

Cheers

Paul

Sorry Paul, only got the 5.3 these days so it's c38009. This as stated is no longer available, can anyone suggest a direct replacement?
