Noisy front suspension
1996 XJS 4.0. The front suspension seem to be very 'clattery' on the least road surface imperfection. I haven't notice any loose suspension joints but I suppose there could be wear that could cause this at 88,000 miles. Is this a normal condition of this model? Thanks for any opinions

The top shock absorber bushings are very soft, and don't last long. When they go you get clunking/rattling noises when you go over bumps. Buy some polyurethane ones at almost any parts store, they are pretty much universal, and you will never have to change them again.

It could be a lot of things
Balljoints
Upper or lower WB bushes
Rack bushes
Shock absorbers
It would pay you've it checked out. If you are handy you can jack the up and check most things your self

Mine was doing the same when I went over any imperfection on the road. Top mounts had fallen apart....you could shake the shock from underneath. Quick job to swap them out and now she's purring again.
Good luck.
Good luck.
