Cool Oil filler cap is hard to remove when hot?

I have a 94 XJS 4.0l and a 99 xj8. Both vehicles exhibit the symptom
Of the oil filler cap cannot be removed while the engine is hot.
I remember seeing a 1972 E-type at a Massachusetts tollway gas
Station that had gotten really hot due to low coolant and oil.
The owner could not get the oil filler cap off. An hour later he was still waiting
For the engine to cool down so he could get the oil cap off. He was
afraid that the engine would seize if more oil wasn't added before it cooled down.
??? I left without knowing what happened to the XK-E.

My XJ8 has the plastic type of cap that will ratchet freely if there is
too much resistance in tightening or loosening the cap.
Very disconcerting while waiting for an oil change gang to figure out
Why the oil cap just won't come off. I learned my lesson and will go
Back to doing my own oil changes.

The XJ6 engine oil cap is very difficult to remove while the engine is hot.
I was wondering if this was a safety feature from Jaguar Engineering?
Is it a common issue with all Jaguar engines?

Never had any of these issues... Neither my V12 nor my I6 nor does the V8 have these problems. Sounds to me like the oil cap seal is too sticky...

Not only Jaguars!!! My daughter's 2001 VW Passat wagon did that and more!!!

It's oil cap is in two parts. Using a bit of whatever strength I still have, I gave it a twist, while hot. The parts parted ! Yeah, odd verbage. Could not resist. More tools and I got the other part out.

So, I enforced the mating. Drilled an off center hole in each. Installed a small bolt with a nut. Works, but when hot only with male torque, she not able to. But, works>>>

Yeah, the E type guy need not worry. Low oil level only an issue with the engine running. Adding oil to an engine that isn't does little. The oil pump isn't pumping!!!

I college, I worked at a full service station. No plastic. Just USA tin.
But, from time to time, we checked the oil level while pumping gas.
Nope, no auto nozzles then. Squeeze til that burble signifying full was heard. At times, no oil shown on he stick. Add as many as four quarts to a five quart sump!! We called them "driveway oil changes". Boss liked them. Increased oil sales pleased TEXACO as well. Their rep always on his ... for increased sales.... Gas, oil and TBA.

I have very rarely tried on my Jaguar or other cars as I usually check oil level when engine is cold, except for auto transmission which requires level check when aat operating temperature.

Why, out of interest, do you want to remove the cap when hot???????

Regular occurrence on my V12 and old XK 6-cylinder as well. Never happened on my XJR....no doubt because it had a plastic filler cap.

If it cant wait till its cold then getting the cap off is the least of the problem ;-)

I'm sure most of check and top-off when the engine is cold. But, if you're out on a road trip there might well be occasion to check and top-off at a fuel stop or some such when the engine is hot.

cheers

I was at the local quick change oil shop back in January and the techs could not get the
99 XJ8-VDP oil cap off because the engine was hot from the drive over to the facility.
After watching them futz about and then bringing out a rather large wrench/spanner I
call a stop to the process and took the car home. After a 3 hour cool down period
I was able to get the cap off and I finished the oil change in 35F weather.

I had finished my weekly 15 mile drive in the XJS and after arrival at home I decided
to give the oil level a quick check. The car had set for about 20 minutes and the oil
dipstick indicated about a 1/2 qt low condition. So, i tried to open the oil filler cap
and it was really hard to move. Generally I can just twist it off with one hand.
But, this required 2 hands to get it off. No wrench!
The engine was quite warm. . . okay, it was still hot.

But, 2 different types of engines and they exhibit a difficult oil filler cap removal when
the engine is hot.
By the way, I read a tidbit about why the AJ6 engine block is sort of huge.
According to the XJ Engineering web site it was because Jaguar was considering using the
3.6 and 4.0L engines as possible diesel platforms.

Oh well, P O R - Press On Regardless

Once upon a time. One went to the gas station to top off the fuel
or on a trip to top off. Engine warm. Attendant pumped the gas, checked tire pressure,. coolant level, oil level and wiped the front and rear windows. Metal all the way around, no issues.....

Noses on the islands for air and water... Rack od oil cans and a 'stabber-spout", or further back, glass bottles with a spout...

Most motorists of old knew if their steed was likely to be of need of an oil infusion.

In about 1950, shoo, chums, Roy, John and I decided on a fling to go from El Paso, Texas to Long Beach, CA. The conveyance was Roy's
family hand me down car. A very nice 39 Ford standard four door. But, alas it's post WWII 46 Mercury engine loved oil. heating issues lead to that. Solved, but thirst remained.

No matter, as I worked at a gas station, I got a deal on a case of 30W Texaco. Not the higher priced Havoline!!! Good plan, but not enough.

At each gas stop we checked the level. Usually added two!! Oops,
took all of the case to get us there. We had a ball. Fun on the amusement park known as "The Pike". Gals, beer, pin ball machines.
Novelty! TV. None at home yet... Bars had 'em. Grainy black and white.

Time go home. Roy's uncle was an exec at Union 76. hew donated a case of premium purple oil!

We crossed from Blythe, CA to Quartzite, AZ a night. Hot!!! Wow,
the trusty V8 threw a fan blade into the radiator. Middle of a very hot desert. I'll save that tale for another day.

Stay tuned,,,,,

Insomnia and foot hurts...
