Onboard diagnostics?
I've done a fair bit of searching on the subject, enough to vaguely grasp that the Marelli era XJS could flash codes on the trip computer under certain circumstances, and proper OBDII was introduced sometime during the facelift years. My research appears to indicate that there was no such system prior to the Marelli trip computer codes.
Tonight after work, I got in my car and for about five seconds after the engine fired up, I saw something flash on the trip computer that read something like "J:8:?:?" where one of the question marks may have been 6
She's been running like a champ since I got the alternator rebuilt, no odd noises, smells, or suspicious behavior so... just what on earth is she trying to tell me?

I think she's not saying anything else than the trip computer display has gone a bit wonky.
The codes that come up on a Marelli car are all (as far as I know) "FFxx" codes. Where xx = numerical digits.

Ok, 'never' isn't quite true. But, if there's any doubt, yes, clean connections first and see what happens. On old British cars a the majority of the much ballyhooed electrical horrors can be solved by cleaning/tightening connections and grounds
