That broken plate in your photo is the same piece that broke on mine. That caused the first and third clutch packs to be engaged at the same time, so that burns the fluid very quickly. Good job you pulled it apart, you would not have gone very far with it like that.

That is exactly what I thought! And I am wondering how it looks in my 78k mile tranny which I will be storing just for safety! That tranny worked wonderfully apart from the R-D bang.

Luckily all normal things that can be replaced easily

They seem to last 100K miles/160,000 km, so it probably has some life left in it.

No, but I still have the original transmission sitting here in case. So, no worry about that... And what the TÜV can't see, doesn't need to be mentioned

Hey guys,

does anyone know of a good(!) brand for new plates and clutches that won't set me back a couple of thousands? And does anyone know of a Jaguar-GM-Other Brands-crossreference site for these tranny parts?

cheers

Damien

I use Rockauto, but I'm sure there are others. I have used the consolidated freight option to ship parts to friends in the UK and the price was very reasonable and arrived in a few days.

You can buy individual parts, or different levels of rebuild kits.
Here is a listing that is TH400: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/c...sion-automatic

I looked at Rockauto. The prices aren't bad BUT shipping is in my case about the same price as the parts...

Jaguar TH400 bolt pattern is Jeep AMC also used by Roll Royce, I don't think Ferrari used this bellhouse I think they used the Chevy.

Similar Daim but not the same. AMC variants generally have one bolt top centre, jag does not and dowells on the AMC are symmtrical with adjacent bolt hole while the distance between dowells and nearest bolt hole in the jag is different on each side. Dimensions also differ.

There were 2 different Chrysler TH400 bolt patterns Big Block and Small block the Jaguar TH400 is a slight modification to this. Buick also used a very similar wheelhouse to this.

There is no way Jaguar could have afforded GM to cast them a special bell housing.

The first is the Mopar SB and 2nd is the BB

Chrysler? Why would they use a GM transmission when they had the very well regarded 727 Torqueflite?

They didn't, not in the purest sense, at least.

The 400 was used in certain "AMC Jeep" vehicles...70s vintage as I recall. Via various corporate marriages and divorces in the 80s and 90s, Jeep eventually became a Chrysler product.

I'm not aware of the 400 being used in what we'd typically consider to be a "Chrysler" product.

Cheers

Just of curiosity I've done a little Googling on this TH400 case and bolt pattern thing.

Early on (1968 to 1971 or something like that) the TH400s used in Jeeps had a Buick bolt pattern....which made sense because they were used behind Buick engine. And the Buick pattern, by the way, is the same as Olds, Pontiac, and Cadillac.

Anyhow.....

After that, for a couple years, and adapter was used to mate the TH400 to the AMC/Jeep bolt pattern. Presumably this coincides to the move away from Buick engines and to AMC designed engines.

After that a AMC/Jeep bolt pattern case was used....so no adapter was needed.

In the mix, near as I can tell, are *some* 4wd versions having a different bolt pattern at the rear of the case to accommodate xxx-transfer case. I think these were late 70s variants.

If anyone was thinking there might be 100% interchanability between any/all of AMC/Jeep 400 and Jaguar 400 cases, well, you better double check. It might not work !

Cheers
DD
