Default Rear brake parts advice, please.

Finally have gotten around to ordering the pads and rotors for the rear brakes of my 1992 5.3 litre v12 XjS, Vin # SAJNW5847NC181646.

Just a few questions to make sure that I'm not ordering the wrong parts...

1) I've gone ahead and ordered two of these rotors.
Centric Parts 121.20008 Rear Disc Brake Rotor | eBay
Description shows they fit a 1992 XJS 5.3, no notes on chassis numbers. Hopefully, I am assuming that these will fit.

2) Haven't pulled the trigger yet...will shortly on these pads:
CENTRIC 102.00090 Brake Pad or Shoe, Rear | eBay
Description is the same as above, no notes on chassis numbers.

3) Saw these shims:
BECK ARNLEY 084-2053 Rear Brake Pad Shim | eBay
Description shows they fit from CU (guessing that means chassis number?) 188105. Since the last digits of my vin are 181646 (which I am once again assuming is the chassis number) that these do not apply to my application. Will I be needing shims for this job or will whatever is installed at present work? An ebay search only shows shims with the same Beck-Arnley part number, no other part numbers for other shims that may work.

Thanks for the help,
howlinowl

Oooohh....kinda off-topic, but I just clicked on my vin in my post and brought up the VIN decoder. Cool!

Just noticed in the graphic for the brake pads that they use shim kit 115-00063. Did an ebay search and came up with this:

CENTRIC 115.00063 Brake Pad or Shoe, Rear | eBay

The description states that it does not fit my 1992 XJS.

Call welshent.com and ask for John at ext 168. Welsh is my source of correct jaguar parts. Ebay sometimes can be few $ cheaper, but you are risking of getting incorrect, or mickey mouse parts.

If your car has the old inboard brakes (and, as a '92, it should) those look like the correct parts.

Oddly, going to the Jaguar/JHD webpage your car (181646) shows having outboard rear brakes. Weird. But, not the first time weird things have happened with parts listings

FWIW, I've never seen pad shims on the "inboard rear brake" cars....although some brakes pads come with shims anyway,as anti-squeel devices.

Lots of incorrect, confusing, or misleading info out there with these on-line parts catalogs. Usually, if shims are needed, they come with the pads.

I just did the brakes and rotors on my early model '93 w/ inboard rotors. I purchased the Beck/Arnley premium rotors and PBR metal master (Axxis) pads from RockAuto.com. VERY good prices! Very happy with the feel of the brakes so far, but the install was just completed.

Default Changing Inboard rotors

Denver, did you drop your IRS cage to do the rotors change, or keep it in place? -Do it yourself, or shop it out? -Any tips or procedures you would want to share? Last question, did you replace the hand brake pads too?
Thanks

Hello Greg. Denver Jaguar did the actual installation for me. Ted said it is a "bear" (he used another B word) of a job. They did not drop the entire rear end as many do. Yes, the parking brake pads were shot and were replaced as were the rear axle seals and bearings.

Doing the rear rotors it is far easier to drop the rear end - it is only 12 bolts and the tailshaft bolts. Clamp off the brake hose with haemostats so bleeding is easier and the handbrake cable.

The headache is the calliper bolts these are almost inaccessible. And I would hate to have to install the security wire while the rear is in the car.

Default Rear Brakes

Thanks Warrjon, and Denver. -Denver, would you dare divulge what the Jag Dealer charged you for this job, in the chance I would run mine the 400 kms to the nearest dealer to have practically the same thing done, plus rear springs and shocks replaced the same time.

Greg, as with most Jaguar repair work it was cheap! Ted billed me $1,400 for labour and parts with the exception of the rear rotors and all 4 pads which I supplied since I wanted those specific brands. He said they have many "tiny, specific" wrenches to do the work without completely dropping the rear end. The restoration section of the shop is like a toy store with e-types, 140's, 150's and a 330 so I figure they know their trade.

Thanks Denver, That price does not seem that scandalous after all. I have just ordered the Rotors, lifetime warranty pads and e-pads, along with caliper seals and diff. seals. When I get the job done, I may as well get it all done at once, including shocks and possibly rear springs.

You will have a new ride once all is completed! I believe there are 4 shocks in the rear if I'm not mistaken.
