I'm finally getting around to cleaning up the rear end of my recently acquired pre-HE.

There's plenty of wax underneath which has mixed with various dirt, oil leaks etc over the years. So, I've just started the horribly messy task of soaking it all in white spirit to try and remove the coating so that I can properly paint the components. At this point, I'm avoiding dropping the cage but it might eventually come down to that. (I also don't want to steal the limelight from our current "cage-fighter", Orangeblossom, whilst he's in full flow!)

In the meantime, I've taken off the lower cage tie plate and then I'll do the springs and shocks later. With the tie plate dropped, I decided to change the diff oil today. As with many diffs, I noticed it had a "self-draining" function which meant that it seemed to have lost just over 1 litre since 1980!

I now want to take off the tie brackets (item 27) to dewax, strip and paint them. Is there any reason why I can't remove them in situ, just undoing the lower shock and lower wishbone nuts, with the car on the ground and suspension loaded?

Don't mind me with that 'Limelight' stuff, as I don't have an ego problem and in any event, I've also learned a lot of Stuff from you and will no doubt continue to do so in the future, as I think that you can rightly say, 'we're all in this together'
