Default Seat Belt Retract

Hi guys. On my '86 Cabriolet, the seat belts will not tension or auto-retract as they should. I can manually push the belt back, but it is like the spring has weakened. Any solutions? Thanks. Rod.

On other old cars (including Jags) I've had good results by removing the belt assmbly and thoroughly cleaning and lubricating the retractor mechanism. Voilá....the retractor comes back to life!

You might be shocked at how much gunk and debris you'll find.

Don't actually *disassemble* the mechanism. Just unwind it, clean it, and lubricate sparingly

Cheers
DD

I have that on my '94 drop top. How do you get to the mechanism? Doug when you say remove but not disassemble the mechanism I'm assuming you mean take it out of the car but not tinker with the internals? What do you use to lubricate it?

Further to my first post (above), the drivers side has now locked.
Is it hard to get the trim off a Cabriolet (2 seater) to check seatbelts?

Just done this myself (although didn't have to take the whole thing out). Pics and instructions can be found here: Seatbelt
