Default Shift selector not going into 1

I have a 1990 XJS, 27,0000 miles.
I recently ran over something in the road which knocked a hole in the oil pan and a hydraulic line. I fixed both of these items and I do not see anything else under neath the car that appears damaged. BUT I got it together and went for a test drive. It won't shift it appeArs to be stuck in 1or 2 gear ? It reverses, drives but has issues pulling itself some so I suspicion 2nd gear. The selector moves to every gear but will not go into 1 gear position. Any thoughts?

Bigmo,

Welcome to the forum.

Is your car a V12 or a 6 cylinder. That will help with the sorting process a lot.

Thank you for that.

On the LH side of the trans casing is a steel arm that the gear select inner cable attaches to. This sounds like the cable has been dislodged, and when the lever inside the car claims D, the trans is only going into 2. Simply loosen the clamp nut for the outer cable casing, remove the ball socket thingy from that arm, manually move that arm to P, move the gear lever to P, slide the cable outer casing through the clamp until the balljoint slips back into the arm hole, tighten the clamp, refit the nut on the balljoint, all done.

On the RH side of the transmission, on the lip above the pan joint, and towards the front, is the vacuam modulator. It controls the up shift and downshift of the TH400. It has a SMALL vac hose on it, and its REAL CLOSE to the exhaust pipe. That hose may have got dislodged/ripped off/ or just fell off.

The 2nd is just a thing to check whilst under the beast.
