Slight clicking noise XJ-SC 88, is this a lifter?
Hello to all,
I have been reading the forum and learned a lot. Thanks to all who contribute.
I just bought an 88 XJ-SC with the 5.3 V12. The car needs some interior work, but all in all it's in good shape. The only thing is a slight click which I think is a lifter. I haven't made it to my mechanic, but the previous owner's mechanic said it was a "comment noise". Has anyone ever heard of this before?
Thanks again, if anyone is interested I will post pics, it's a beautiful car.

These things are tricky to deal with via written descriptions.
Could be a valve out of adjustment. Could be a fuel injector...they click a bit. Could be a dropped valve seat....aaarghh!. Could be an exhuast leak.

It can't be a lifter. The V12s don't have 'em. It's also unlikely that it's valve adjustment. These tend to tighten up as the valves wear rather than loosen. More likley one of the other possibilities that were mentioned (i.e. injector or exhaust).
Hi,
Thanks to everyone for their input. My mechanic is now going to think that I am an engine diagnostic genius. If anyone thinks of something else, please post it.
I started a blog to get people's opinions on classics, I hope you get a chance to look at it. There is one pic of my car, but as requested, I will upload some more. Please leave your opinions on the blog, don't hesitate to be sarcastic or funny. All comments (within good nature) are welcomed!!!

Hi to all!!
Once again, thank you for your help, I am new to classics and your comments, even if just to discard something are truly useful to me.
I also realized thanks to your comments that my description may have been a bit vague.
So here I go again. The clicking noise is located in the engine, not undercarriage. It sounds like a click similar to when you place a small piece of paper in a fan. It also accelerates when I hit the throttle and the frequency increases dramatically. Also, when the car is a bit warm, is kind of dissipates and you can still hear it, but much less than when you start the car up. And just on more thing, I was told by the previous owner that when the weather is warm, it is also much lower in volume.
Thanks again!!!!!
Please check out the blog, only your comments can really make it worth while...
