Default So my gf learned why you don't give it gas in a wet corner...

Its been raining here in Tampa for a few days straight, my gf had to use my car to get to work and she gave it a little gas in a corner. The gas tank was nearly empty so the back end was super light, and its got a good 300 whp. Whipped around, hit the curb, 1/4 flip, stopped by trees that saved her from going upside down in a swamp.
I'll be fixing her back up, but it'll be with a salvage title because my insurance decided to total it.
Not pictured is the roof panel that is dented in, but the pillars are fine.

I'm glad it wasn't worse

Yeah, the XJS can get a bit tail happy. Wet roads, power, limited slip diff......all conspire.

Now, on to something else.....

Please describe mods you did to get 300 wheel horsepower ! Inquiring minds want to know !

Cheers

She had a slight concussion and some bruising on her leg, but she's fine otherwise, and yeah we are still together, haha. She had never experienced driving it in the wet, so I should have put more emphasis on watching the gas in the corners.

Its swapped, edelbrock Chevy 350 kit. Its *around* 300whp, the engine makes 318 to the crank, so it loses some in the drive train. Gotta get a dyno run before I get the efi kit.

OOPS.

Glad she is OK, the spouse I mean.

Looks like minimal damage, but still a bugga.

Sorry to hear about this. You need to have a talk with the insurance company about their decision. If the sub frame isn't tweaked, or, twisted, there is nothing "totaled" about that car. They must be basing their decision on the cost of repair vs the market value of the car.

That's how it's usually done....repair cost versus value. Except typically it isn't 'market value' but, instead, 'actual cash value'. Not quite the same thing. This usually comes in closer to 'wholesale' value.

Cheers

Very sorry to hear, and glad to hear everyone is OK.

Wow, from the photos it looks like there isn't as much damage as I would have expected. The only damage I could see is the roof, the front corner, and the leaper on the hood...

Already talked with them, they are declaring it a total loss, and I have to get a salvage/rebuild title, they're giving me a $2600 settlement (plus compensation for my GF missing work) because they "value" the car at $3250. Should cover the pertinent damage (remounting the tires and a busted indicator light) and I'll get on to the other stuff when I can. I'm going to be insuring it through Hagerty or Grundy after this, I hear they are better for classics.

Overall, I'll just chock this up to "**** happens" and move on.

On a positive note, the underside of your car looks clean and pretty much rust-free. That's probably something the majority of us can't say about our XJS.

Glad everyone is ok. Amazing how forgiving wet grass and trees are......

Trying to focus on the positive...... your exhaust looks very interesting....... looks like it doesn't go through the rear cage, but just goes above the drive shafts ?

Glad the GF is ok. That picture is a perfect example of why I drive the CTS4 in the rain and leave the kitties in the house.

Wow!!! GF sitting at the curb awaiting help. Great sign.
Slight concussion? An oxymoron. Serious stuff. Needs watching.

Except for that curb, she might have gotten away with a flat spin and no damage to her or car.

I've done more than a few studies to determine ACV in my past career. ACV is best defined as the amount agreed on by a willing seller and a willing buyer. Finding comparables and using Kelly r similar help do that. Advertised price is misleading.

Insurance companies are interested in dollar value. no more, no less.
A somewhat simple formula. Repair if the cost does not exceed ACV less salvage. O'wise it is a "constructive total". Not worth fixing.

Why they would consider her time of work is a bit odd????

My best to the three of you!!
