Default Squeak at around 20-30 mph ?

Hello all…

I have a squeak on my 93 XJS which starts as you speed up to around 30mph. The funny thing is that when I shift from drive to neutral at 30 mph, the squeak goes away. I put the car on jacks to see if I could pinpoint the location but it would not do it on the jacks, only on the road.

if anyone has any thoughts or ideas what it might be I would be very grateful?

Thanks

JB

Sounds like it's when the engine is being loaded, so possibly one of the drive belts, or bearings on fan, alternator, power steering or aircon pulleys. Alternatively, could be the torque converter.

I'd start by looking at the belts, possibly try a spray of belt dressing and see if it improves.

Good luck

Paul

Is it a 4.0? Often the culprit is the harmonic balancer splitting. It could be as easy as a loose or too tight belt. Tension is key with pulleys. If its a V12 check your belts and the condition theyre in.

Constant squeak, same sound from start to 30 mph? Or does it get faster as the road speed increases?

Maybe U-joints? Shifting to neutral unloads the drivetrain and the squeak goes away?

Cheers

Thank you all for the suggestions..

It is a 4.0 on and the squeak seems to start around 30mph and not before. Above 30 its hard to tell because of wind noise but I think its still there.

.I think I have enough ideas from all to start picking through them to figure out what is causing it.

Regards,

JB
