Default Starter motor problems?

Hey guys,

I have an '84 XJS that is not starting. When I turn the ignition, all that happens is there is a high pitched clicking noise. It is as if the starter motor is not turning over some how. I cannot diagnose the problem. The battery is new. Any ideas?

Thanks,
John

Despite the new battery it sounds like low voltage. I'd clean all relevent connections: battary cable ends, chassis grounds (look next to the left motor mount), connections at the start (hard!)

Also the "+" junction posts on the firewall. The right side post is most important for starter operation.
