Turned ignition off took out key and steering no longer locks and you can put in R,N,D without pressing brake also you can put in any gear without key in ignition and no foot on brake. I have not mucked with anything it just happened.
Could steering possibly lock up while driving ?

Maybe our cars were different, but I do NOT recall a gearlever interlock in the Pre 1994 cars. Maybe the US of A cars got it, no idea why.

I thought it only arrived with the J Gate system.

The steering lock is possibly just a gummed up plunger in the barrel, after all it is OLD now. Remove those 2 shear bolts, and lube that plunger, refit with new shear bolts, or standard bolts.

Panic not, she will know, and mess with your head even more.

Are you sure it hasn't been that way all along?

Might just be wheel position. Have you tried removing key then turning wheel a little in either direction until locking mechanism slips into engagement?
l can only speak for the V12 cars l have, none of them have any form of gear lockout.

I reckon he is still on the New year Juice, COFFEE Mac, LOTS of it, and maybe the Jag will appear as it should.
