Default Thinking about painting 1990 XJS Black

Would it be a huge sin to paint my tan/gold XJS convertible black? Would you all disown me????

Black just looks so much more sharp! The tan paint on my newly acquired XJS is dull, flat and could use some lipstick (as is expected from a 22 year old car). Has anyone else changed colors?

You can see it in my garage. Those pics where taken 2 years ago by the previous owner, just after being detailed, and before he parked the car in a garage for 2 years with his planes. Needless to say it doesn't look that clean right now.

Do whatcha want....it's your car! :-)

A color-change paint job runs into lLOTS of extra work and money, though.....door jambs, trunk, underhood, etc.

Personally, after owning a couple black cars, I've sworn on a stacks of bibles that I'll never have a black car again. Wayyyyy too much work to keep it looking good. Just my two cents.

Cheers

IMHO black is THE best color on these cars. Just bear in mind, when you go in for a repaint, in addition to all the added cost and complexity involved with a color change (underhood, trunk, door jambs) many body shops will upcharge for a black repaint. Not necessarily an upcharge, mind you, but the bodywork needs to be PERFECT or else the black will look terrible and that takes time and money. In fact, I wouldn't trust a body shop that doesn't quote you more for a black redo because it tells me they're not going to take the time to make it perfect. That's why mine's out getting resprayed the original white.

Couldn't agree more

It's your car, do whatever you like with it.

Changing a cars colour and doing a good job is going to be very expensive.

Black is the hardest colour to paint, and shows up every single imperfection in your bodywork and it takes a ton of prep work to get it anything near right

And yes, it is a pain to keep clean

BUT a black XJS is a beautiful thing......
