Default Throttle Body Stepper Motor Help Needed

96 xjs 6 cylinder. Is there an easy way to test or determine if the throttle body steeper motor is working properly?

Default Idle speed control valve

erratic idle...foot off gas and surges up and down. Got a code the other day idle speed control valve but mechanic said he found a vac hose off and now check eng light is out. Here's the thing... I see aftermarket ones on ebay for $15, but a lucas part is $195. I don't mind spending the $ for the Lucas if I was sure thats the issue. Wondering if I should buy the cheapo to see if it helps and then buy the good stuff it is the issue. Then I wondered if there was a way to test mine for being good or bad.

I' d start with the aftermarket. $15 is worth it, no? Then if it starts to fail in 6 months, you can invest in the pricier version.
