Default torque converter compatibility GM Th400

Anybody know a good highstall torque converter that will work with the Th400 Transmission. I've been looking and people keep mentioning that a 3 bolt will not fill. I came across this today https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performance+Products/555/60402K/10002/-1?gclid=Cj0KCQiAyp7yBRCwARIsABfQsnSboZHvWGYZocmglU lroUwLjjIDukbuJe9YcRwufUPLT3waEdiqGakaAnE5EAL

w_wcB from jeggs. Not to many specification on it but the price looks good.

There are surely many choices that will work.

I had TCI make a converter for me. Not cheap, about $500 many years ago. The guy I spoke to at the time was familiar with Jag V12 requirements

https://www.tciauto.com/torque-converters.html

The concern, or my concern at least, is having a converter that'll withstand the 6500+ RPM that the V12 is capable of. I'm not sure if the lower priced choices are strong enough or balanced well enough. Maybe? Maybe not? I dunno.

Others will chime in

Cheers

I'm pretty sure a 3 bolt will fit. You'll just have 3 unused holes on your flexplate. Whether 6 bolts is truly needed is up to debate.

Try these folks. Yank they make anything you want. I have had a couple high stall from them. Top notch converters.

Default Compatibility answer for noob

Hey guys,
I've been reading threads on many different forums for hours now but never came to an answer, so this thread seemed legit for my question.

My torque converter is slipping pretty hard so my workshop needs to replace it. The original Jaguar part is 1500€ and on top of that not even available anymore.
Can I just buy any TH400 Torque Converter for 200 on ebay and hope it fits and is not worn out or are there compatibility differences? I only have the original Jaguar part number. What would you guys suggest for an absolute anti-mechanic like me?
Thanks in advance!

I bought my torque converter from Autozone, it was $127 a couple of months ago. I used the one listed for Jaguar XJS, not some obscure cross ref. It had six bolt holes. It’s been fine.

If you're thinking of buying a used convertor, well, I'd consider that to be very high risk.

I think any TH400 converter will fit and work....but not necessarily work well. There are differences in stall speed....which, in essence, is the amount of intended, built-in slippage.

Another high risk choice, IMO.

But it's pretty hard to argue with success

Doug mentioned high risk… Well I did a SECOND TH400 with an AutoZone torque converter. Drove around the house and the torque converter was screaming almost immediately. Vanes colliding internally probably. Complete crap. I’m sure it filled my fresh rebuild transmission full of metal shavings too. So… yeah… no Autozone converters again!

I need to learn to do a cheap manual swap.

Several friends have gone the small diameter after market stuff from Jeg’s seems to work well on his 800+ horsepower 9 second drag racer.

it’s pretty easy and can be cheap if you can find a good used Chevy transmission at a reasonable price. You’ll need the Chevy bell housing, a flywheel, clutch to fit the Chevy splines. Pressure plate and throw out bearing.
You’ll also need to buy a new pilot shaft busing and either bore it out yourself to the size of the pilot shaft or have a machine shop do it for you.

This is actually easy to make if you have a drill press and a way to cut aluminum.
I buy my aluminum plate used from the metal recycling places in town. Often find 6061 T6 in the correct thickness
