Transmission oil

After renewing the sump gasket I need to fill the tranny with oil. How much should I put in to start with? Anyone had any experience of this? Many thanks

You didn't say which car.

Assuming the '89 with the 5.3, it'll have the TH400 transmission. I initially go with four quarts on those.
