Transmission Shift
Are there any recommended services for the 95 4.0L ZF transmission? I seem to detect the 1st/2nd shift is not as firm as it was. Also is it normal for the transmission to feel like a standard trans when you take your foot off the go fast pedal. By that I mean the engine drag slows the car more so than any other automatic I have driven. Our XJ8L does not have the transmission drag like our XJS does. I feels like the torque converter lock up does not release with power off. This may be contributing to my gas millage being only 16.5.
Servicing that trans is simple and not requiring any special tools, or fluid.
Most, including me, now use synthetic fluid in them, and with a few "drop and refill" processes, the trans will sweeten up nicely.
Not too familiar with the 4HP24 lockup system, but the 4HP22 in mine is a mechanical lockup, and purely on/off related to speed, in my case 82KPH.
The off throttle retardation of our X300 is significantly better than the S Type.
If the lockup is not "un-locking" you will have engine stall at the traffic lights, and dont laugh, that does happen to these, read about it many times.
Poorish mileage may be many things, and a trans not performing properly, may be only one of them.
