I am a Mechanical Engineer by training, and I spent a number of years designing compressor packages for natural gas, to move the gas from the wells where it is produced to a processing plant and then into pipelines for distribution. So regulators are a very important part of what I did, as gas can come out of the ground at up to 3,000 psi and it has to be reduced to 50 psi to go into the engine that drives the compressor.

That said, I do have great mechanical aptitude and machinery just speaks to me. Usually I can look at something and figure out how it works. My degree didn't tell me how to work on cars, that's simply experience and something I enjoy doing.

Ah, I suspected as much. Those were the words of someone who knows exactly what he's talking about, not someone parroting something he read recently and hasn't quite mastered, like I tend to.

I can look at something and figure out what colour it is. Mind you, my main barriers to not doing more work myself are a lack of time and space, not a lack of desire to learn. A fear of screwing it up entirely is also there, mind - I do have a history of trying to make things better and making them ten times worse in the process. Usually based in ignorance - I don't have any sort of instinctive understanding of mechanics, so need to learn rather than fiddle.
