Default V12 engine removal

So I'm fed up with the 5.3 HE dicking me about in my 1990 so I'm going to pull it out and overhaul it. Just a quick question; can it come out with the transmission or do I have to split the pair?

It will definitely come out in one piece, as I pulled the V12 out of my 89 that way. The main thing I had to do was disassemble the rear trans mount, which is fairly complex when compared to an American car. Other then that the only other thing that was troublesome, was the exhaust studs to the manifolds, getting to them was a lesson in persistence as there isn't any clearance or good way to get to them. Good Luck, other then that no real problems.

Done many.

Undo the trans mount bolts at the floor pan, the exhaust, and heat shieilds for access. Leave the mount assembled to the trans pin, BUT, if you are intending to rebush that mount whilst its out, then separate it IN the chassis.

Remove the steering rack, or at least lower it on the tie rods. It sits in a very precarious position, and is easily clobbered by the sump if the angle of the dangle is slightly out of whack.

Trying to seperate the trans in situ is a mongrel task at best.

I found ot easier of the front is taken apart meaning PAS pump and altenator off etc. But then again, that is a thing of personal preferance.

My opinion was, that a normal engine crane can't lift high enough to get the bugger out.

It is also vital to have a tilting deice on the crane, so the engine can be pulled out. Also all the rads etc etc need to come out.

Mr assumption again, must learn better, hahaha.

Clearly the rads, etc out of teh way, front bumoer off also gives that ectra 4" sometimes needed when refitting theng.

I take the air cleaner covers off, and thats about it, it comes out easy.

If you have Cats in the downpipes, remove those downpipes if possible. We dont have those Cats, and the downpipes stay put when I drag that thing out.

Gregs mention of an angler, is good, although I have never used one, just position the chains to give the angle I want from the get go, and get into it.
