Lightbulb What master cylinder assembly fits 89 XJS

Hey Guy's I've searched this forum, and the Jag lovers forum, as well, and have not found an answer to this question. I have an 89 XJS which has standard /non power brakes, and ABS. My car suffered an engine fire, which destroyed my reservoir for the brake master cylinder. I was told by several knowledgeable people there is a suitable replacement for it from a Toyota or, Mitsubishi??? No one has ever locked it down and said this Make, year, and model. It bears strong resemblance to several used on Toyota's, but I'm not sure??? I've searched for an original one, and inquired about a couple, but the prices were pretty staggering. Especially since they were probably supplied by one of the oem producers that also did the Toyota's etc. Any help would be appreciated. I'd hate to have more in the brake system then I gave for the whole car. Thanks for the help.
PS I would also like to eliminate the ABS, as that seems to be an Achilles heel for these Jags in general. Would a 87 or 88 XJS ??? Or maybe an XJ ? fit without ABS??? Thanks Again.

Wow, that's an interesting question. I don't have the technical expertise to answer it but on the surface it seems that going from ABS to a pre '89 style would/could work. Finding a donor car should be doable.

Well, Toyota never used the Teves MK II/III system used in the XJ-S. Some Saabs did though, but then again, Saabs aren't really "mainstream".

You're best to replace the unit with a used one (overhauled). There are loads of XJ-S with this setup. It was used from 1988 until 1991/1992 (at least). So you have a few years to choose from.

As mentioned this should be perfectly doable. Get a good used non-ABS pedal box, booster, brake pipes. I'd go for a new master cylinder, though. David at Everyday XJ should be able to fix you up with whatever you need as far as the used parts go.

Cheers

89 jacobra,

I understand why you might be considering moving away from the ABS system. In which case, the earlier XJS servo system will just drop in. But if it's just a melted plastic reservoir that's gone, surely that's just a $10 part from an XJS breakers, isn't it? They are still available new via your Jaguar dealer at about $175.

Good luck

Paul

I wish it was a $10.00 part. I'm in Northeast Arkansas USA. and as of yet have not found any cars, or salvage yards, that have one to pick and choose from. I've resorted to Craigslist and Ebay but the prices are pretty stiff. Rock Auto shows quite a few parts with fairly reasonable prices, until you add in the shipping. So right now I'm in wait and see what comes along mode, as I'm still fitting the 460 and making clearance, etc. Thanks for the Input

PS I've checked a couple places mentioned on this site and what I found was very pricey.
