Default What purpose does the rubber tube that goes from top of dizzy to the air inlet side

of the AAV serve?

Thats where the rubber tube seems to run to anyway.

Just clean air distributor cap ventilation?

It prevents hydrocarbon vapour buildup inside the dizzy and the consequent risk of explosion.

I wonder if this was in response to exploding distributors, or just engineering over cautiousness?

The V12 E types don't have the venting, and the HE engines do, so there must have been a reason to introduce the venting. It's a cheap fix if it saves even a few exploding distributors.
