Thank you. Once the belt arrives I will dive into the noise from both sides.
As far as car compliancy - the sticker clearly say it is 100% "conforming to all applicable federal standards...", I have no doubts it's a legit import. As curious I am I just went and looked... same vin is stamped on the body, on the aluminum tag riveted to the body, and on the sticker on the door. According to this: The Jaguar XJ-S C in position 11 means manufacturing plant : " 11th is emission control equipment (up to 1987: manufacturing plant, C=Browns Lane) " - which I like better then "Middle East - Emission D" :-) .
I'm minded to agree with Doug. I think the car probably isn't one of the Jaguar evaluation vehicles, and was brought in later as a private import. That might also explain the unusual belt arrangement to fit the air pump necessary for US import. Do you know if the import date was long after the build date?
Also I think the formal evaluation cars would have been given the secondary US VIN and your car doesn't seem to have that.
You are correct about the 11th character. Cars up to 87 would have had "C" indicating a Jaguar- Brown's Lane built vehicle. The VIN decodes as a standard LHD 3.6 manual Coupe.
I suspect one of the previous owners needed to replace water pump and could not find exact part. I can see that air pump mounting has a big washer that aligns pump forward and pulley on it is held by 3 "appearing newer" bolts. I did a search for water pump for my car and I can anticipate a nightmare finding one that fits. My guess one of the previous owners assembled something that works from components that could be found.
As far as manufacturing dates I found this discussion: https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/xj-s-euros-3-6/327883 ("We just found out through JDHT that his car is one of 26 in the U.S" - so this answers. I actually made request to JDHT myself before seeing this).
Apparently it is not an easy task to establish those days by vin. The tables I found on the web contradict each other. The car in this discussion(what are the odds?) is actually the car I own now! :-)

Interesting stuff! If your car is one of the 26 evaluation cars, it's interesting that they apparently weren't given the typical US secondary VIN that other XJS were given when exported to the USA?
One can pin down manufacture date within about a month from the VIN. I think your car was made around the end of October 84. It would be really worthwhile you applying for a JDHT certificate which will give you exact build date and confirm the despatch of the vehicle for the USA.
As regards your water pump i think it supersedes to EBC8550

It can be very confusing. There are/have been several different VIN "conventions" used over the years in different parts of the world. As for Jaguar, well, their own service publications often don't acknowledge the "Two VIN, USA car" situation.
I guess I didn't catch that we were talking XJ8 in the XJS forum.
We are talking XJS :-) When I registered on the forum I only had XJ8 and choose login name poorly. Now I also own XJS.
I replaced the belt and forgot about the noise ( I guess belt took care of it, but can't say for sure as I had bigger problems to deal with and didn't drive the car much).

I just changed my Alternator on my v12 and the fan on it was making a noise like what is in your video. It was loose and spinning freely if the pulley.
oh boy , been 26yrs since i did that operation, all i can remember is it is a Mitsubishi alternator!
pic in engine on stand , made things easier to do! way back in time, Mitsu alternator on Jag v12!
Just read through the whole of the thread and congratulations on sorting out the problem at last, I hope you all enjoy the car very much,
sorry tried to delete this as posted on wrong thread, how can you delete ?
