What sort of Jointing Compound (if any?) should I use when refitting an XJS Exhaust?

Default What sort of Jointing Compound (if any?) should I use when refitting an XJS Exhaust?

Hi

To-day I removed one side of the exhaust system on my 1989 V12 XJS

As the long straight pipe was hanging down lower than the one on the other side, due to the fact that the straight pipe had not been pushed far enough into the middle exhaust box before the clamp was done up.

As the joint had gone a bit rusty, it didn't want to go in any further, so the easiest way was to remove the whole exhaust system from the front down pipe to the rear tail pipe rather than do it in situ.

A bonus being I could also inspect the whole system and clean it then give it a coat of heat resisting paint.

All in all it was in great condition, so now with the system out of the car I was able to get the straight pipe repositioned, so the only job left is to put it back into the car.

My question is: What sort of Jointing Compound (if any?) should I put around the inserts before I re-bolt the three bolt flanges together on the exhaust?

Once this has been done its road wheels back on and ready for MOT.

You shouldn't need any at all. Just make sure the 'olive' seals are in good shape and the bell-shaped mating surface of the mating pipe is clean and smooth.

Cheers

Hi Thanks

I was kind of thinking that way myself, though I think I will give the olive seals a little smear of Copper grease, to iron out any minor imperfections.
