Most of the new cars look like bars of "Dove" soap. Or they have a front grill that
looks like Darth Vaders helmet mouth. Not much originality there.
I wonder when the Death Star model will make its appearance.

The XJS does not resemble any bath product or Star Wars character wardrobe component.
Not yet at least.

Ha ha ha, interesting analogy. I am a big fan of Star Wars. Maybe I'd buy a new model if they brought out an "XJ" wing lol!

Oh, and also the fact new Jaguars are so bloody expensive ($215k + F-Type in Oz!) Id have to be the next Wolf of Wall Street!

After reading over on the early model XK 8 forum the scare factor was even higher than the V 12 XJS forum over here. That said there are eight early model XK8 convertibles for sale locally in my price range, four V-12 XJS (0ne 6.0), and zero six banger XJS! This winter there always seemed to be two 4.0s on Craig's list locally and a bunch in sunny Florida going so cheap the E Bay price difference would pay for a trip. Could there now be enough older and younger dudes starting to love the late model 4.0 XJS convertibles as to cause a market upsurge right as I am looking? Guess I will just have to be patient.

It's inevitable that they will go up in value at some point. There are so many of these cars being junked and parted out right now. Every one that is parted out is one less that can be preserved and enjoyed by collectors. Granted a lot of them were produced, but pretty soon there won't be that many left. Then the prices will rise. It's always been a controversial design but as time goes by it seems to grow more and more classic, in its own peculiar way. It is one of the most distinctive Jags ever built. So yes, it will go up, someday. In the meantime, we can enjoy our very affordable (at least as far as purchase price goes) classic cars.

i would love to know where you got those USA export numbers from. I was under the impression that Jaguar didn't keep those records. I'm curious because my 93 conv. was one of 799 world wide.

I have heard that there was a special very limited
production of the XJS when it first came out in 1990. The
rumor I heard described a unique front end suspension and a
fiberglass front bumper and side running boards. Does
anyone have info about this story?

I did hear that the 1990 XJS coupe is the best XJS to buy. LOL... Guaranteed to run forever without any issues. I love mine...

I am new to the Forum. How can I search using my VIN number to get the UK Production and Import number to US? I am trying to verify history between production in 1990 and first sale in Us in 1995.

Wow! The lower price of gas is really showing up now in the U.S.
The U.S. refineries are producing gasoline at record numbers now which should
make the coming Summer a very nice driving time for those thirsty Premium Gas
Jags !
I also applaud the increased sales of the electric cars which will increase the value of
our XJS Jags as nostalgic collectibles. Unless some car manufacturer comes out with
a electric conversion kit.
I saw an article where a California manufacturer has obtained a manufacturing license
to build 1965 Ford Mustangs with a lot of internal improvements like a 500HP engine
and other techie gadgets to fit in the dash - LCD displays, USB and Bluetooth connections.
Cost - about $120K per unit.
There is an outfit in the UK that will rebuild an XJS for a similar sum. Excluding shipping costs to and from the UK. Anything like that in the US?

"Darth Vader's helmet" - very funny! I don't like the look new cars are getting. All the new Lexus models look like that now. I have an 08 Lexus LS and mine has the traditional front end before they went to the Darth Vader look. I was diving the other day and in my rear view mirror I saw a new Lexus coming up next to me. I thought, "Here comes one of the ugly new Lexus IS250's." It ended up being a new LS460. So ugly and they all look the same.

All the new sedans do look like a bar of Dove soap. Even the XF and the new XE do. Fortunately, the XJ does stand out to some degree, though not like it did in years past. And the XK and the F-Type certainly look great. I guess it's the new sedans in general that all look alike.

Getting to the original topic of this post, I have to think as there are fewer XJS' on the road the prices will increase. I have a sense that people now think of the XJS as a classic looking Jaguar when years ago that was reserved only for an XKE. When I was driving mine last year a lady pulled up next to me and actually thanked me for owning the car. Another man who saw my car parked came up and asked, "Do you keep a towel in your car?" I replied, "A towel? What for?" Then he said, "To wipe everyone's drool off the car!" I loved that!😄

Seems like taking out the XJS for a drive is more of an event then anything else. I have people walk across parking lots to check it out and tell me how much they love the car. Seldom do I stop at a light without someone making a comment about how beautiful the car is.

To be honest I never get use to this sort of attention because in the back of my mind I know how much I paid for a fine example during the recession and at the same time I know how much time and money others have into E-types etc.

The fact is the XJS has a distinctive presence about it and in most parts of the world are seldom seen out being driven anymore. The convertible with the top down just shouts "sleek and sexy".

I can say without reservation that the XJS has given me back great value and satisfaction. So for me the XJS is becoming more valuable every year regardless of it's monetary value.

So to all the new car manufacturers, I say "keep pumping out the same looking generic boxes with fancy LED lights". This just makes the XJS look more classic as every year goes by.

I think I said it before but IMO the XJS was the last of the "classic" looking Jaguars in the GT line (XKE-XJS-XK8 etc). I like the XK8 but I think it started to really take on that "modern" look by then.

What you guys think? Could also be another reason she might go up in value one day I suppose.

I'm sorry to be so late in returning to this thread. I have been a fan of the XJS since it first hit the market. So, I have a decent collection of books about the XJS and of he production numbers quoted one was 58% of total production being exported to North America. A little over 115,000 were manufactured X 58% = 66,700 to North America.

Total rubbish, I am afraid. The XJS first came out in 1975. In 1990 there might have been special models (like the XJS Le Mans) which were just cosmetic marketing exercises on 5.3 lire V12 pre-facelift models, not actual new models. The "facelift" cars came out in the early 1990s and featured rather more modern looking bumper covers etc, and better 6 cylinder engines of 4.0 litre size in place of the 3.6, and slightly enlarged 6.0 litre 12 cylinder engines (from 5.3). The facelifts also had a slightly more modern, slightly more rounded look to them and actually had very different body engineering and body panels (thanks to Ford who poured money and expertise into Jaguar) - even though they looked very similar to the pre-facelifts.

Facelifts had far better electrics too, also thanks to Ford quality which transformed Jaguar's production systems and quality approach.

Unique suspension etc etc and XJSs that never rust or go wrong are also, most sadly in the latter case, total myths too!
Greg
