as i'm waiting for a light to turn green i notice a very attractive woman in a very flattering dress step out into the street with her arm raised as if to hail a cab. (confirmed when she says "cab" while looking down the avenue.)

the light changes, and i proceed to turn the corner onto the street on which she is standing. she changes her hand motions to a two armed wave, seemingly directed at me, and while looking right at me, but still saying "cab."

so i stop, and without another word, she opens the door, and sits down.

she complimented the car, "what is this? a jaguar? it's beautiful."
and i proceeded to give her a ride uptown.
she gave me her number as she got out.

anyway, i guess we all knew cougars and jaguars would get along.
I think this deserves a follow-up. What happened?

That was a story from three years ago, mind. Has this member even been active recently? Or seen since that fateful night?

The XJS is a handsome Car and in many ways much nicer than the 'e' type with good ones fetching £125,000!

The only thing that I would think about changing is the front grill, for the single bar type like on the early 'e' types.

Maybe one of you Clever guys could Photoshop one up, just to see how it would look in real life.
. Well, I'm with you but with a different solution. On my '94 convertible I installed a mesh grille at both, top and bottom grilles. In my case not only for the looks, but also to symbolize the 130 hp worth of nitrous injection. You can see what it looks like on in my page.

The XJS V12 ( pre HE ) was the last car Sir Lyons had a hand in designing. Which to me is the last pure Jaguar. When you add that beautiful V12 into the mix, you really have something stunning to own.
I’m a racer. That means I’m not a slave to originality and thus my car is devoid of the ugly accessories, the messy EFI, and excessive clutter needed for smog. Open that bonnet and you see the real beautiful V12 polished up with the simple carbs in place.
Yes I start out with a 17 horsepower disadvantage. But that is more than eliminated when the power robbing dog leg is straightened out.

Just a minor point about something that irrationally bugs me: It's Sir William, not Sir Lyons. "Sir" is always used with the given name, like "King" or "Prince".
That aside, I agree fully with your assessment of its looks.

Thank you for correcting me. I honestly didn’t know. There was no disrespect intended at all. In fact just the opposite. I shall try to remember your correction

Glad you took it in the 'umble spirit it was intended. Americans seldom need to refer to Sir Anybody, so it's quite common over there to make this mistake. Funny how in England, the higher your rank, the more likely you are to be known by your first name. Mr Smith, but Sir James. Prince Charles. And of course, Queen Liz. (No, never Queen Liz....)

Things get muddly with the peerage, however. Lord John is not the same as Lord Grantham. Lord John is probably the son of a higher-ranking peer like a duke and using a courtesy title. Lord Grantham from Downton Abbey is a full lord (earl) in his own right; Lord John from Outlander is someone's son. (Checking, he is in fact the son of a duke, thus entitled to the Lord Firstname thing.) You would never called Lord Grantham "Lord Robert" and, conversely, Lord John is not Lord Grey or Lord Melton. Lord Nelson was called that because he was a viscount, a lower-ranking peer, like Lord Merton from Downton Abbey, a "mere" baron.
Things get muddlier with the female side of the peerage, with Lady Mary and "Lady Crawley" being different ranks, and Lady Grantham outranking them both. Lady Firstname is the daughter of a lord; Lady Surname is merely married to one and could have been born a commoner (perish the thought!). Which is why, in Downton Abbey, Lady Rosamund is offended when she's addressed as Lady Painswick, even though using her surname might seem more polite. (And Lady Placename is the wife of Lord Placename.)

This got away from me a bit, sorry. I just find the whole thing delightfully confusing, and am glad I'll never likely have to actually worry about getting it right in person....

We remain indebted to our Court Correspondent for this arcane data.
Mind you fellows, it is all VERY different in France...
I remain, Sir, your humble and obedient servant, or as Alex would say "copy that".
Greg, or as I am more formally addressed by the retinue:
Duc d'Arroux, Compte de Mazilles, Baron Matras.

interesting discussion, however we may all be missing the "elephant in the room". ELECTRICITY. I could possibly see in 30 years time petrol only made available in pint jars (good luck V12 owners), and only from designated pharmacies 50 miles from your home, eco evangelists burning you from the stake with your own pint jar of petrol for even thinking of murdering small babies with your toxic fumes.

excuse the possible exaggeration

No, I think petrol will remain available for some time. What will happen, however, is that petrol stations will become less and less common, and petrol engines will get taxed more and more. In addition to more and more restrictions where they can drive, like central London at the moment. I can see them being banned from national parks, for example. "Welcome to the Lake District. Electric Vehicles Only" (something similar currently exists at Zion National Park in the US, where to get much past the visitor centre you need to take their eco-friendly buses).
But then again, I think it'll be a very long time before petrol goes away completely. All these "promises" by car companies and governments to make electric cars the mainstream are worth as much as the hot air that is all they really are.

Trouble is you fail to think outside the box. They make ethanol fuel out of any grain or grape etc. Here in America we already use E85. 85% ethanol 15 % gas.
If you like power, you’ll love ethanol.

When trying to predict the future, I remind myself with how well those before us have —from the serious to the not so serious — in the 70’s it was a predicted “population bomb”, that Blade Runner envisioned life in 2019 or in the 50’s everyone assumed we’d all be tooling around in flying cars.

Petroleum isn’t going anywhere soon and the majority of the world’s electric cars would ironically really be burning coal at a distance. The only thing certain about the future is its uncertainty.

Cheers
