Default Wiper linkages

I have an 88 xjs RHD with stuck wipers. The motor is fine but the linkages appear shot. Can these be replaced and how?
thanks

Do you have a photo or can you get a little clearer in what you are dealing with? Stuck?

From memory,,, the entire assembly can be lifted out with the removal of a couple of bolts and some fiddling. Be careful with fingers and on/off... It's often underestimated,,, but that damn wiper motor, its hinges, arms and bars will do a NUMBER on unsuspecting fingers. Very careful...

Or,,,, really give a go at freeing it up... Might take some work, but worth it... They are pretty tough

Hello David

I think first thing first is to confirm what is tight. I would do as JJJ advised (also carefully) and confirm if the motor is tight or if the linkages are tight.

If the linkages are tight - I would place Singer sewing machine oil at all the pivot points and see if you can free them up over time.

Sewing machine oil is brilliant - does not harm the rubber at all and has freed up a lot of things for me in the past.

Just for knowledge - the difference between earlier models compared to the 89 series below

Cheers
Steve

I'm unsure... I would try and write directly to a few of the major suppliers... It's a tough search. I did a search and came up with a few hits BUT,,, with the trouble of finding the parts, separating all of the old hinge points, the cost of the, what, 5, 6, 7 bushings and HOPING for a flawless reassembly (really,,, it's a pretty intricate set of connections that have to work well thru a million cycles) I would rather just work with what I had or just get a "new" set up... A used one could most likely be found pretty easy...

Is every point really seized and/or locked up. Or just a few?

Just a few. I think I will try the oil first. Thanks for all your input. Happy new Year.

You say the motor is fine. How did you check it?

On a couple of my Jags, moisture got into the motor and caused the magnets to rust, breaking the bond with the housing. I took the magnets out (marking their orientation), cleaned off the rust, and re-glued them. If you do it, make sure that there is sufficient clearance between the magnets and the armature.

I retrofitted a wiper assembly like yours to my '76 coupe. As part of the project, I disassembled the assembly, sourced the parts, and rebuilt it. My write-up on the project is at my website.

Ed,
Thanks for your help, I love your website - I think I may have a few other project ideas after I have solved this.
Thanks

David, if you decide to remove the wiper arm posts you will likely find the nylon washers shot. Like other parts of the assembly, these were never intended to be replaced so never available parts. I had some machined from nylon stock and have many extras. Let me know if you need them.

Good luck.

Also, I have a complete face lift ('92 on) wiper assembly. I mistakenly bought it to retrofit to my '76, but it doesn't fit the earlier cowl cavity. The motor might fit though. I recently listed the assembly in the XJS Parts For Sale forum for essentially free ($5 + shipping) after having it on eBay for months without a bid.
