Default Wiring/Electrical Problem help please

Problem- Brake lights and signal lights do not work

I checked the fuse box and the fuse that goes to the stop lights was blown. I replaced it and tried the turn signals(they worked! but only in the front) then I pressed on the brake and nothing happened. I tried the turn signals again and they were not working.
Then I checked the fuse and it was blown.

Help Please!!!!!!

Remove the bulbs in the rear and make sure the correct ones are installed.

What are the correct bulbs? I have an 88 XJS, does it say in the owners manual?

How did you fix it? My uncle is a master mechanic and he think its something called the "stoplight sensor module" i think i found it, its a small metal box(roughly the size of a cigar box)

I'm away from my books at the moment but I recall a stop lamp failure module located aft of the shift assembly in the center console. This is what controls the dashboard bulb failure lamp if a brake lamp fails. It's nowhere near the size of a cigar box. More like the size of a typical accessory relay

The brake lamp in the rear window bypasses this module. SO....disconnect the module and step on the brake. If the third brake light operates and the fuse doesn't blow then it's a fair bet that the problem is the module or a problem down stream of the module. If the brakes lights still don't work then you have a problem upstream of the module

Cheers
DD

This is what I am looking at. Is the module located underneath the window switches?

Google C42291 Module Jaguar or click here:

JAGUAR XJS XJ6 STOP LIGHT FAILURE TRANSMITTER C42291 | eBay

It's in the console. If you remove the cubby box I think you'll see it right about below where the window switches are. In that neck o' the woods.

Cheers

It might be located in the boot (trunk) LHS under the side reinforcer just by the LHS courtesy light. At some point the location was chnaged to the console.

Haha all you guys are going to make fun of me but I figured out what the problem was -__- My bulbs were burnt out so I just replaced them, however my back right socket wasn't working so I fiddled around with a knife and it worked. I learned a valuable lesson yesterday... START WITH THE EASY THINGS FIRST...Greg Edge I should have taken your advice lol

Heh heh. Glad it was an easy fix. The fuse blowing problem has gone aways as well?

Greg knows how easily the low-tech solutions are overlooked....something the rest of us often do :-)

Cheers

The fuse box is located on the drivers side, underneath the steering wheel. Its a black rectangle. You can't miss it

Good Luck!

I had similar problems (rear brake lights would not work).
It turned out to be a dead relay (blue type) located in the left rear area (had to squeeze my hand in the space left of the gas tank to find it). Replaced the relay and all worked well after that.

How can i tell if the relay is dead by looking at it?
