I am looking to buy a 1987 XJ-SC from a private party. Are there many known problems with this model or specific items to check for? Was 1987 a good year for this model or should I be looking for another year or model? I want a reasonably priced Jaguar that the top goes down, and as few problems as possible. Thanks in advance for the help.

I suggest going to the "XJS" area. In one of the sticky threads at the top of that section is a buyers guide that will cover the high points.

As a rule those older XJSs need quite a bit of rehab work. A pretty high level of commitment is needed. Fabulous cars once you fix all the things that the previous owners didn't do....or often never even knew about. The V12 engine can be challenging but most repairs are DY-able if you have patience and take the time to learn the quirks. Tons of info to help you if you take the plunge.
