Default XJS 4.0 Oil Pressure

Hi guys,

I'm just curious to find out if my engine oil pressure is "normal". Once warm, and at cruising speed the pressure is just over 4, and then when idling it drops to about 2.5. Is that normal? It fluctuates a little at idle....it that normal?

Hopefully I've got nothing to worry about.

Thanks

Paul

I was briefly confused about the oil pressure when I bought my XJS. I hadn't seen pressure values in Bar units since college.

1 bar = 14.5037738 pounds per square inch.

So 36 psi at idle doesn't seem so bad after all, eh?

I'll let the much better informed regulars offer an opinion on that pressure range. I will say that my pressure gauge is often pegged at 8+ bar off-idle, hovers around 3 bar (or less) at idle, and also fluctuates as you noted. I'm told the AJ6 has hellacious oil pressure by design.

Normal to see lower pressure at idle and/or when the oil gets hot.

I'm not sure what Jaguar specifies for the 4.0 specifically but a rule of thumb is 10 psi/1000 rpm

Cheers

Mine seems to consistently be in the higher range of the guage, but not to the far right.

Paul, my '96 XJS 4.0 runs at about 4 (mid gauge) after warm. Drops to 1.5-2 at idle. Not to worry, IMHO.

Interesting. Your car has the AJ16, mine has the AJ6 (4.0L). Should I be concerned with the higher pressure readings?

I wouldn't worry about higher readings. Could be the gauge or the slightly differen't engine. Too low oil pressure is a worry.
