Default XJS 4.0L 1993 Electric Seat Problem

Please help, recently purchased the above vehicle and the other morning sat in the car and the drivers seat back started to move forward to it's max position. Would not respond to the seat button to move it back but other seat functions worked.
Turning ignition on/off starting car and turning off the seat backrest button enabled the seat to move but after a few minutes it started to move forward again. Also noticed the computer display would not display the time but what appeared to be an error code starting with pp.....
Help please as I have just opened the car this morning and the time is being displayed and the seat works O/K

Welcome to the forum Barny,

I've moved your question from UK Region section XJS section. Members here with the same model will be able to help with the 'haunted' seat.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Congrats on the new car

The intermittent problem with the seat sounds like a dodgy connection/ground. If you don't already have one, download the electrical guide for your car here http://www.captainjaguarscathouse.co...ec%20Guide.pdf and check the connections to the seat control module and the ground point. You may well need to to disconnect the controller and clean the connections along with the ground point. The controller location in the footwell makes it particularly prone to water ingress.

The manual above will give you all the component locations along with the wiring diagrams for your car.

Cheers,

Allan

Also are you sure the trip computer displayed PP? The error codes should be FFxx with the last two digits being the code. What was the number after the first two letters?

Cheers,

Allan

Default XJS Seat Problem

Hi Alan and thank you for your kind reply.

The trip computer error code was pre-fixed by pp and four numbers. I cannot remember as it is working O/K at the moment. What threw me was the manual lists a number of error codes but none of those listed.

Regards

Paul

Hmmm, very odd. I've never seen that before.

Are we talking about the trip computer that is in the middle of the dash above the radio?

Cheers,

Allan

On the seat control, my bet is on the relays in the module. As mentioned, water in the foot well can cause corrosion. I had seat issues and was able to replace relays as they are industry standard and cheap, if you can solder and remove relays from the PCB.

The switch modules would be my next place to look. It's a bit more fiddly as you have to be careful opening up the modules and replacing the relays.

The intermittent nature of the fault smacks of a dirty or poor connection/ground to me, which is easy to check.

Cheers,

Allan
