Mmmmmm, going out on a limb here, and assuming its a V12??.
Lift the distributor cap, turn it upside down and ensure the "carbon brush" is intact. I have had MANY with this item burnt away, and the symptoms are exactly as those you state.
If so, then a new brush is available, any Bosch, Lucas, GM cap with a spring loaded carbon brush will do the job. Down here we simply buy one from our friendly Holden (GM Aussie style) dealer, at about $5.
I would then look at WHY, and the most common reason I have found is tired and OLD HT leads.
