Default XJS Parking Brake

Just purchased a 1995 XJS with 36K miles. The handbrake has no tension (not used to that) and it doesnt seem right. It will go on if you lift the handle and let it down. To turn it off i have to pull the handle all the way up and click it off. Is this correct? It;s not how the manual says to do it and no tension seems odd?

You should be able to feel the tension, although the "fly-off" action is correct. You should be able to feel the tension as you pull up the lever.

Try adjusting the brake as per the manual. Put in neutral, release brake, carefully raise the rear and support on stands with front wheels chocked., remove rear wheels, adjust brake shoes until drum can't be rotated using levers between studs or just put wheel back on studs and try turning. (Remember to turn all the way around to get access hole lined up again.) Once shoes are adjusted up tight, back off fractionally and see if handbrake tension is ok. If not, then go to cable adjustment.

Good luck

Paul

Are there any videos available showing the adjustment or replacement of the parking brake shoes? where is the access point at the back of the assembly? is it protected by a rubber grommet? Which way do you turn the adjusting wheel on each side to tighten the shoes? I'm having a hard time finding anything on line...!

The adjusting hole is in the hub portion of the brake disc. The wheel has to be removed to access it. Use a flashlight thru the hole and turn the disc until you see the adjusting wheel.

I found it. Thanks Jon. It’s actually a brilliant system…no crawling under the car and removing dust caps. It was so easy to adjust!
